MEET THE CREATOR

Growing up, I found myself battling against the systems that for years have contributed to the downfall of so many black girls and women in Flint, MI.

Between the ages of 3 and 12, I experienced everything from verbal, physical, and sexual abuse, which contributed to how I viewed the world and everything in it. So often I felt like there was no hope and no way out and felt as if the world was against me, which in turn led me to run away from home at the age of 12, searching for a place where I could find the protection and guidance that I needed.

I soon found out that I was not alone in these experiences, and that there were so many other young black girls struggling in the same ways.  However, I quickly realized that there was nowhere we could go that could truly provide us with the type of guidance and support that was necessary for your inner healing and development.

Heading into young adulthood is when I finally began to find my tribe, and over the years I began to cultivate a community of sisterhood that loved, protected, and even challenged me when I needed it most. The experience I had from being able to have women in my life who held space for me, empowered me, and continuously supported me is what saved my life, and is the exact reason why I have created CAMMI.

I'm aware that there are so many black girls and women that have never had an opportunity to experience this level of community, and truly, our young black girls deserve a space that loves and accepts them as they are and for who they are, and they deserve to be seen, heard, and advocated for.

I want to share my experience of sisterhood with the girls who may not have anyone to turn to. I want to give them a place of their own to learn how to heal and grow on their terms.

By creating a place that introduces Self-awareness, Self-love, and Care, through CAMMI, we will begin to redefine the standard of what it means to be a strong black woman.
